REALLY DYNAMIC EARTH!
Go to http://earthquake.usgs.gov/eqcenter/catalogs/ Download M 1+ earthquakes, past seven days (colored by age) and it should automagically open in Google Earth. Now answer these questions:
1. When and where was the most recent quake?
2. What was the largest magnitude quake and where did it occur?
3. Which area in the world had the most concentration of quakes?
4. Did most earthquakes occur at the plate boundaries or in the middle of
the plates?
5. Where is the fastest moving convergence zone and how fast is it
moving?
6. Is the Pacific Ocean plate moving the same speed in all directions?
Extension: View the shake map of the largest magnitude earthquake you can find by clicking on the quake to bring up its information bubble, then clicking on the shake map link. Now use the ruler tool to determine how far you had to travel away from the epicenter till only light shaking would be felt. Still have spare time? Explore real serious data about the world you live in:
