Froth Floatation Separating some mixtures is difficult, one method is called Froth Floatation. It involves crushing the material and placing it in a solution with a surfactant. The surfactant forms bubbles which capture part of the mixture. Then once the froth is removed we have separated the mixture. This method is used to treat industrial waste and loads of other separation problems.
Experiment: Simple Mining Aim: Separate Iron Oxide from Sand Method: 1. 2. 3. 4. Place a mixture of Iron Oxide and Sand into a conical flask Add 100ml of water and 20ml of Kerosene Place cork on conical flask Shake flask
Results: Red bubbles formed after shaking Conclusion: The Iron Oxide was captured by the bubbles. Once the froth was removed the Iron Oxide was separated from the Sand.
