New teachers – Lets be honest, you need all the help you can get! Seating charts are a simple and effective way to get those classes under control so you can actually do some teaching, develop your pedagogy, and try out some of the more subtle behavior management techniques.
It has a simple interface with only the essential features. There are no big lists of options to master or buttons to ignore. And the simple grid based view lets you create any desk arrangement to match all your classrooms. After the students have been automatically assigned seats, you can easily drag-and-drop them around to tweak the seating chart.
Just because it looks simple doesn’t mean you can’t do advanced things with it. Imagine how long this would take you to do by hand. Find the best desk for your 33 students while keeping all the students with bad relationships as far apart as possible and out of each other’s line of sight, and all the students with good relationships next to each other. At the same time, group all the students of similar ability together and ensure those kids with learning difficulties are at the front of the room. And just when you think you are done, you realize that you forgot to put a buffer of empty desks around that particularly disruptive student who cant be near the window and need to start again. Now imagine how much time you waste doing that for all your classes every couple of weeks, for every different classroom you’re in, through the whole year.
Personally, I had more important and more enjoyable things to do with my time so I built Termites to do the hard work for me and create automatic seating charts. I had some shocking classes in my time as a high school science teacher and Termites helped me get them under control. It let me get back to quality teaching, developing better lessons and resources, and creating an effective learning environment.
